If you’ve outgrown your Volkswagen GTI, or just want to do some camping with a little Volkswagen flair, then the 2015 VW Tiguan, with its handsome European styling is the compact crossover SUV you’ve been looking for. While the 2015 Tiguan is long on driving fun, it’s short on value.
There were fewer players in this segment when the current, German-built model arrived for 2009, sharing its platform with the Mark 5 Golf that was, at the time, called the Rabbit here in the States. So call this test a farewell to the first-gen vehicle with the chimeric name suggestive of a beast that would eat its own platform.
For 2015, all trims feature roof-rack rails. Those interested in a manual version of the Tiguan will have to settle for the base model, while the other trims include an automatic transmission as standard equipment. The Tiguan doesn't hide outstanding performance behind its homely exterior.
The first generation is based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
