Second, there actually is a life manual, but most people reject it and insist on ignoring its wisdom. It's called your heart. That sounds pithy, but I'm being serious. Most people know what they really want, but then reject it. They give very reasonable sounding explanations for why …

Life a User's Manual (the original title is La Vie mode d'emploi) is Georges Perec's most famous novel, published in 1978, first translated into English by David Bellos in 1987.
Life: A User's Manual is an unclassified masterpiece, a sprawling compendium as encyclopedic as Dante's Commedia and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and, in its break with tradition, as inspiring as Joyce's Ulysses.
Your handbook is meant to be your manual for living. It should consist of anything and everything important to living our best life. Below is a good starting point of what to put: Your life adages (i.e. your personal mottos on living a great life. These can be inspirational quotes or personal mottoes.)
While knowing of Perec's constraints and plan in the structure of the novel can add considerably to a reader's experience, it is not necessary to even be aware of them to read Life: A User's Manual with enjoyment. The central plot of the book is the tale of Bartlebooth, an extremely wealthy English resident of 11 Rue Simon-Crubellier.
Much of the contents are not rules of thumb at all. Rules of thumb are supposed to be shortcuts and informed estimates that make practical, everyday activities easier. Many of the items in this book are no more than interesting (?) anecdotes, with little or no practical application, and some of the information seems simply wrong.
For all of you potential readers out there, here is a REAL review of this book: Rules of Thumb is more than a book. It is a toolbox of shortcuts. There are a number of things I like about the book, starting with how it feels. It is small and fits in the palm of your hand.
Use the index to find the rule you need. Best of all, Rules of Thumb compiles the advice of people who have learned from experience--so you don't have to. In this time of penny pinching, it will make a great stocking stuffer.
