With no more tipping space south of the railway the only way to go was north, but the original Green Lane stack was in the way. An aerial flight was installed over that stack to start another tip near Featherstone Main Colliery. The start of Ackton Hall Colliery's new stack can be seen at the side of that tipped by Featherstone Main Colliery.
Ackton Hall Colliery was the first pit to close following the end of the miners' strike and this could not be contested as geological difficulties had made it impossible for the pit to continue production. Featherstone is the subject of a study, Coal is Our Life, by the sociologist Norman Dennis, published in 1956.
But in 1888 trade was bad and he couldn't keep up the payments on the mortgage and he was declared bankrupt.
