OBJECTIVE 1: DEFINE MANUAL CLEANING. Manual cleaning is the physical removal of all visible soil (gross debris) from an item to render it safe for handling and further processing for patient care. This process begins with point-of-use cleaning in the surgical suite.
Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities (2008) Cleaning. Cleaning is the removal of foreign material (e.g., soil, and organic material) from objects and is normally accomplished using water with detergents or enzymatic products.
Cleaning and disinfection should generally occur from the cleanest area to the dirtiest – from an ISO Class 6 or 7 cleanroom to the ISO Class 8 anteroom. Generally cleaning and disinfection should be done from top to bottom. Daily cleanings should be performed at the end of the compounding day.
Thorough cleaning is required before high-level disinfection and sterilization because inorganic and organic materials that remain on the surfaces of instruments interfere with the effectiveness of these processes.
