They can be either neutral or even spoil the aerodynamic character of the car, making it worse. The function of the Air Dam is to deflect the oncoming air. It forces maximum air to go over the top of the vehicle and allows only a minimal quantity of air to pass underneath the vehicle.
The function of the AirDam is to 'spoil' or nullify the effect of the undesired air movement across the vehicle when it is in motion. It not just only disrupt the existing airflow patterns, but also generate the down-force as the air passes around the vehicle.
It can be seen that adding an air dam in front of the diffuser stops it working, which is, perhaps, not surprising. The use of diffusers is now very widespread - see for example the Lotus Elsie. Graham Oates has added one to his sprint and hill climb Lotus Europa.
Air Dam vs Spoiler: The Air Dam is fitted at the bottom of a car’s nose or front bumper. It directs the flow of air around the car instead of under it. The manufacturers term the airflow which goes underneath the car as the ‘underflow’. It is highly turbulent and also consumes more energy. Thus, it affects the vehicle’s fuel economy as well.
This R-spec version was designed to erase any impression the general motoring public had about the Cobra not having adequate power. The spec-sheet for the 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R makes it clear that this isn’t a car designed to perform comfortable GT duties.
The 2000 Cobra R was without a doubt the meanest, fastest and most focused car of the Cobra R cars so far. In fact the 2000 Cobra R was the fastest and best handling Mustang ever and an absolute monster of a performance car (in a great way).
The 2000 Cobra R had independent front and rear suspension, race ready brakes, a Tremec T-56 6-speed gearbox, and a DOHC 32-valve V8 fitted with alloy heads that would eventually find their way onto the V8 in the Ford GT supercar.
The 1999 Mustang Cobra had been fitted with an upgraded 4.6 litre DOHC V8 with a claimed 320 hp and 317 ft lbs of torque – but period road tests revealed that it was slower than the outgoing 1998 model, with dyno tests showing horsepower levels closer to 285.
