Make sure that you are getting your initial reading by taking your file a little long to read the PDL, then back up your file short of working length, then re-advance it to your zero zero. This will “calibrate” your apex locator and will give you a more accurate reading. If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device.
Modern electronic apex locators can determine lengths with accuracies greater than 90%, but have some limitations such as the need to minimize substances inside the duct, duct shape, etc.. The use of apex locators does not have satisfactory results in immature teeth with open apexes.
The use of apex locators alone without a preoperative and postoperative radiograph is not a recommended practice, since apex locators may not be able to work properly in all conditions. It is mandatory to confirm radiographically the working length established using the apex locator.

Whether dry, wet, bleeding, filled with saline, EDTA, NaOCl, chlorhexidine, the Apex ID can still provide accurate, consistent and dependable readings. Unlike most apex locators on the market today, Apex ID continuously calibrates for accurate, uninterrupted readings in real-time. Recipient of The Dental Advisor's Top Product Award in 2018.
