1. Open the Menu. Go to Initial Setup, Input Settings, Output select. Set Output select to "fixed". If it is set to variable, the audio menus are greyed out. 2. Go to Audio Settings. Under the Treble, Bass etc settings is Auto Volume - set this to "off" I think the key is the setting in 1 above, although turning off auto volume also helped in our case.

If you are watching TV, through the tuner connection, you can output HD audio using the Digital Optical Audio. If your source is connected via HDMI, it will let you output audio from the digital output, but it will down-sample the audio and output 2-channel stereo.
The Sharp Aquos TV does not support HDMI ARC. When connected with just the HDMI cable the TV showed a volume control for the soundbar, but there was no sound. Once I connected the optical audio cable I was able receive audio and control it with the TV remote. Did you find the recommended reading relevant to this discussion?
There is the option of downgrading from the HDMI to the component cables and optical directly from the xbox, but preferably we'd like the HDMI connection (xbox --> TV) AND the optical out (TV --> DD5.1). The Sharp seems to not allow for optical output with an HDMI input to run simultaneously.
