National Barbie Day is celebrated every year on March 9 to honor the iconic toy that was launched on the same date in 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York. Barbie, whose full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, was created by Ruth Handler.
Barbie has had over 40 pets including cats and dogs, horses, a panda, a lion cub, and a zebra. She has owned a wide range of vehicles, including pink Beetle and Corvette convertibles, trailers, and Jeeps. She also holds a pilot 's license, and operates commercial airliners in addition to serving as a flight attendant.
In 1984 Barbie is sold with the slogan "We girls can do anything". "Day-to-Night" Barbie comes with a briefcase, calculator, newspaper and business card. And Mattel releases "She-Ra, Princess of Power", promoted with the slogan "The fate of the world is in the hands of one beautiful girl".
Barbie's siblings and cousins were also created including Skipper, Todd and Stacie (twin brother and sister), Kelly, Krissy, and Francie. Barbie was friendly with Blaine, an Australian surfer, during her split with Ken in 2004.
Margaret Rawlins Roberts (1960-present) Margaret is the wife of George Roberts and the mother of Barbie and her various siblings. Also originally a book character, she has not been issued in doll form, however, she made her first on-screen appearance in Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures.
Perkins, a Spartanburg native, was the first black designer for Barbie when toy dynasty Mattel hired her to design affordable, chic clothes for the doll in 1976. Four years later she designed the first black Barbie, and rose in the company after a decade, hiring more black designers.
