Martyn, the first two digits on the brass plate are something the Barrus manual simply refers to as "number" (God knows what they mean by that),whatever they mean, I doubt it's engine size in cc's., the second two digits are what they call "Engine model", I suspect by this they mean horsepower (but I'm not sure), followed by (possibly) one or more of a string of letters that refer to factory fitted …

Barrus make two types of canal boat engine, the Shanks and the Shire. I can find no information on the differences between them apart from one being more expensive then the other. Does anyone know? In fact, apart from what Barrus themselves have placed online, there is almost no references to the engines, online, at all.

We just bought a widebeam with a Barrus Shire engine 45 hp. Not on board yet so don't have the serial number but it would have been installed maybe 2010 at earliest and has 260 hours on the clock.. I have the manual, which is exactly the same as what can be downloaded from the Barrus Shire web site.
