Store grinding wheels carefully on racks in dry places, and visually inspect them for warping, chips, cracks or other damage before installation. Discard used wheels once they are approximately 2/3 worn.

Do make sure your bench grinder has an adjustable work rest that is kept adjusted to 1/8 inch or less from the wheel’s grinding face. OSHA 1910.215(a)(4) Work rests.
A well-recognized safety precaution on bench/pedestal grinders is to stand well off to the side of the wheel for the first full minute before using the machine. Accidents have shown that grinding wheels are most likely to shatter/explode during that first minute.
To ensure compliance with OSHA 1910.215, use the yellow Bench Grinder Safety Gauge from Rockford Systems on bench/pedestal grinders to make sure work-rests are kept adjusted to within 1/8 in of the wheel to prevent the workpiece from being jammed between the wheel and the rest, resulting in potential wheel breakage.
