The reason why the container feels a bit loose is so that the 2 sets of gears find each other when the blender starts, and allow the blade to spin. If the container sat completely rigid on the base with no play at all, you would have to make sure that the 2 sets of gears were perfectly matched up in order for your blender to work.

Blendtec informed us that the Total Blender includes what they call a "hammer-fire" system. The main microprocessor will trigger this system if it detects that the blade stopped spinning. The processor will send a series of strong electric pulses with the intent to free the blades from the obstruction.
"Alterna Jars and Blades" manufactures aftermarket blender containers that fit Blendtec Blenders, Vita Mix, Waring MX series of blenders (Raptor / 3.5 hp monsters), JTC OMNIBlend blenders, and many others with same kind of blender base specifications. The jar in the configuration to fit on Blendtec blenders has a removable blade assembly.
