The ice sheet was characterized by lobes (Fig. 3) that occupied large basins in the bedrock surface. These lobes were responsible for the location and overall shape of Cape Cod and the islands.
For most of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, Cape Cod was considered to consist of three sections (see map): The Upper Cape is the part of Cape Cod closest to the mainland, comprising the towns of Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth, and Mashpee. The Mid-Cape area includes the towns of Barnstable, Yarmouth and Dennis.
On Cape Cod, these events occurred within the last 25,000 years, and many can be dated by using radiocarbon techniques. Figure 2: The continental ice sheet advanced across Cape Cod to the islands about 23,000 years ago.

In recent years, the quality of many of Cape Cod’s coastal water bodies has deteriorated due to an excess supply of nitrogen containing compounds. Please Note: Monitoring for cyanobacteria is underway for the 2021 season. We’ve expanded the number of ponds being sampled this year.
