The Data General Nova is a series of 16-bit minicomputers released by the American company Data General. The first model of Nova, called simply the "Nova", was released in 1969. The Nova was packaged into a single rack mount case and had enough power to do most simple computing tasks.
It was used by Data General field service technicians for diagnostics, on-line tech help, and service call processing. Even though the Data General Onewas a breakthrough back in 1984, the heavy batteries and large cumbersome construction was becoming a hinderance by the late 1980's.
The Data General RDOS ( Real-time Disk Operating System) was a real-time operating system released in 1970. The software was only sold bundled with the company's popular Nova and Eclipse minicomputers.
Ultimately, Fountainhead was cancelled and Eagle became the new MV series, with the first model, the Data General Eclipse MV/8000, announced in April 1980. The Eagle Project was the subject of Tracy Kidder 's Pulitzer prize -winning book, The Soul of a New Machine, making the MV line the best-documented computer project in recent history.
Combined with Data General RDOS (DG/RDOS) and programming languages like Data General Business Basic, Novas provided a multi-user platform far ahead of many contemporary systems. A series of updated Nova machines were released through the early 1970s that kept the Nova line at the front of the 16-bit mini world.
