Sep 25, 2014 . I have a Dell U2412. On this model there are four buttons on the lower right corner of the monitor. The right button is the power button. The button in the middle has a something that looks like a screen with an arrow going across it. I was able to use this button to toggle between the "Self Test Feature Check" and the windows screen.

Reset the monitor to Factory Settings. Perform Auto Adjust via OSD. Adjust Phase and Pixel Clock controls via OSD. Perform monitor self-test feature check to determine if scrambled screen appears in self-test mode. Check for bent or broken pins in the video cable connector. Restart the computer in the safe mode.
Unplug the video cable(s) from the back of the computer or monitor. The monitor then goes into the self-test mode. Press and hold the firstand fourthbuttons on the front panel, simultaneously for 2 seconds. A gray screen appears. Carefully inspect the screen for abnormalities. Press the fourth button on the front panelagain.

This happens because the monitor is not getting a signal. This either means that computer is connected to has entered power saving mode, hibernate, or has been shut down. 1. Sometimes simply restarting computer using the power button is enough to wake it up.

That definitely fixed the problem. Using the old cable causes the Self Test block to appear; swapping the new cable in makes it sleep peacefully. Please note that the old cable is a pretty functional VGA cable. There are no bent pins on either end and the video is fine. It appears that all cables are not created equal..
