Aug 03, 2016 . Goto dobsonian Orion vs Sky-Watcher - posted in Reflectors: I have decided on a 10 to 12 inch goto dob for my first visual scope but cant decide between the Orion xtg series or the sky-watcher truss goto. I like the look of the truss but it has a single speed focuser and the Orion has a dual speed they are both crayford style. Dont want to spend a hole lot on upgrades until I know for sure Im ...

You might find that the best magnification for star testing, at least, to begin with, is 25x for each inch of aperture. As examples, for a 6-inch, the magnification would be 6 x 25 (150x) and for an 8-inch Dobsonian, 8 x 25 (200x).

The Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 telescope is perfect for a beginner. It's a compact 114mm-aperture Classic Dobsonian reflector that shows objects in much more detail than a typical 60mm beginner telescope. This kit includes a Barlow and stargazer's toolkit.
The balance is impeccable and there are no shaking, shuddering, or wobbling issues. That is impressive given the hefty 54lbs overall weight. This is partly due to the classic Dobsonian base but also because of some choice upgrades and innovations that Orion has added to this model. The first of these is the CorrecTention system.
The name, Dobsonian, arises from its designer, John Dobson, who devised it back in the 1960s. It first became popular in the 1970s in northern California.
Seizing the chance to find out how far Dobson’s concept has come, The Widescreen Centre gave me a SkyQuest XX12g to play with. This is a fairly conventional truss-tubed Dobsonian, but fired with GOTO. It comes supplied with a 28mm ‘Deepview’ eyepiece plus a 12.5mm illuminated Plössl.
You could get a computerized GoTo Dobsonian that will find celestial objects for you, you could buy a classic Dobsonian telescope that is completely manual, just like the one John Dobson invented, or you could choose a collapsible Dobsonian or a Truss-Tube Dobsonian Telescope for extra portability.
Dobsonians can provide fantastic views of both deep sky objects and solar system objects like planets and the moon. This is due to their large aperture and therefore light-gathering area. Other than Dobsonians, telescopes in the sub-$500 price range rarely exceed 4″ in aperture due to their cost to produce.
The Dobsonian telescope tube assembly is a classic Newtonian. A Newtonian telescope uses mirrors to collect starlight and direct that light to your waiting eye. The biggest mirror, located in the rear of the tube and responsible for light-gathering, is called the primary, and the smaller mirror placed further up is called the secondary.
The Orion SkyQuest XX14g Dobsonian telescope is good for the advanced user wanting to see the best and brightest views of deep sky objects as well as planetary detail. Fully computerized GoTo telescope, and the trusses allow for a compact breakdown.
