Most EbV infections cause no symptoms. Adolescents and young adults who are infected with EbV develop infectious mononucleosis. Infectious mononucleosis is named for the large numbers of white blood cells (mononuclear cells) in the bloodstream. Adolescents and young adults usually catch infectious mononucleosis by kissing someone infected with EbV.
In most young children, primary EbV infection is asymptomatic. Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis develop most often in older children and adults. The incubation period is about 30 to 50 days. Fatigue can last for months but is usually maximal during the first 2 to 3 wk.
EbV can cause infectious mononucleosis, also called mono, and other illnesses. Most people will get infected with EbV in their lifetime and will not have any symptoms.
