High on a wall — Conventional wisdom suggests higher is better. Behind the TV — If you’ve got no problems pulling in reception, a tiny antenna like the Mohu Metro or HD Frequency Mini can be hidden right behind a TV.
Loosen the bolts on the sleeve of the antenna. Slide the sleeve over the pole until the top meets the sleeve. Rotate the antenna so it is facing the general direction of the broadcast tower. Leave the bolts loose for the time being, since you may have to adjust the antenna’s direction.
If you don’t know where the nearest broadcast tower is located, it’s a good idea to try using an indoor antenna first, since it’s cheaper and easier. If the indoor HDTV antenna doesn’t work, you can return it and put the money toward a rooftop model. Keep in mind, an outdoor antenna requires you to get onto your roof for installation.
Power off your HDTV and carefully reposition it to display the ports for easy access. Connect the antenna cable to the TV's cable antenna or VHF/UHF input port, usually located on the side or back. Rotate the cable's F connector clockwise against the port to fasten.
To receive HD over the air, you'll need an HDTV tuner (built into most new HDTV sets) and an antenna. A good TV antenna should be able to pick up HD signals, but some antennas are designed specifically to capture them. Outdoor antennas are always better than indoor ones (for more info, go to antennaweb.org).
Some HDTV antennas are UHF only, which is fine in many areas. However, if your local broadcasters are on VHF, or will be moving there as part of the spectrum "repack" that's about to begin (see the introduction for more information) you need an antenna that covers both the VHF and UHF channels.
Place heat-shrink tubing over the tips of the ears and use a flame or heat gun to shrink it tight to the wires. Use coaxial cable to connect a digital-signal-ready television or converter box to the transformer. Switch on your TV, orient the antenna, and enjoy the show.
