When Faroudja was designing and building the 3k, they had HDTV in mind. The 3k can be upgraded to Faroudja's latest offering, the 5k. From what I have been told, the cost of the upgrade is the difference in price between the two products. There is a spot above the inputs for an add-on card. This card adds new inputs designed for HDTV.

Faroudja DCDi Cinema was developed around higher performance 10-bit processing with extended picture enhancement controls, an active color management system and 3D Noise Reduction. In addition, Response Time Correction (RTC) technology is included to compensate for the motion blur prevalent in LCD flat panels.
The calibrated settings are stored in a video mode called “Faroudja Movie”, optimized for high-end TVs and Blu-ray HD sources.
