Added a possibility to use U2F Fido security keys for Windows remote desktop access. RemoteFX device redirection option in MS RDC should be used by Network Admins, to setup U2F keys on TS host side. “Rohos Logon Key compact” setup should be installed on client PC.
What is a Fido key? A Fido key is a portable security key hardware device that is used in addition to a username and password in a two-factor authentication scenario. Fido keys can look like USB flash drives that you need to plug into a computer, or look like fobs that you scan over a reader. What is a CrucialTec Fido client?
Rohos Logon Key v.4.7 now has multiple improvements, allows using U2F Fido security keys as a second authentication factor for Remote Desktop access. This makes Rohos absolutely unique solution that allows using U2F keys for Remote Desktop 2FA login as well as console-based login.
Currently, there are many Fido2 Certified solutions available to support a wide variety of use cases. These include Fido Certified Universal Servers that support Fido2 and all prior Fido UAF and Fido U2F devices for full backward compatibility with the full range of certified Fido authenticators.
This document focuses on enabling Fido2 security key based passwordless authentication with Windows 10 devices. At the end of this article, you will be able to sign in to both your Azure AD and hybrid Azure AD joined Windows 10 devices with your Azure AD account using a Fido2 security key.
For hybrid Azure AD joined devices, organizations can configure the following Group Policy setting to enable Fido security key sign-in. The setting can be found under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Turn on security key sign-in: Setting this policy to Enabled allows users to sign in with security keys.
Fido2 offers full password-less authentication while Fido U2F is designed to be used with a password as a traditional second factor only. Bottom line, only purchase Fido2 compatible hardware security keys for your organization if you want to go password-less with identity providers like Azure AD.
Also, note that a Fido2 key is not a USB Mass Storage device so there is no security issue redirecting a Fido2 key just in case your company has a policy that USB storage devices are not to be redirected.
