Vildagliptin (Galvus) was approved by Medsafe in October 2008. The combination product vildagliptin + metformin (Galvumet) was approved in May 2009. PHARMAC funded both of these medicines in October 2018. What is vildagliptin?
What Galvumet is used for Galvumet is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in people who are already taking vildagliptin and metformin tablets separately, or whose diabetes cannot be controlled by metformin or vildagliptin alone. Galvumet is also used with a sulfonylurea by patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately
However, interactions with metformin should be checked when using the combination product Galvumet. Refer to the medicine data sheet for further information regarding interactions. The most common adverse reactions identified from clinical trials were dizziness, headache, constipation and peripheral oedema 2.
It may be used by itself, or it may be combined with other diabetes medication such as metformin (see Galvumet ). Galvus works by increasing the amount of insulin produced by your body and reduces the amount of a substance called glucagon being produced by your pancreas.
