Illustrative Benefits. For the PIP Fix to obtain and maintain joint realignment, 50% or more of the dorsal base of the middle phalanx, from the radial to ulnar sides, must be intact. AP, lateral and both oblique x-rays are necessary pre-op, and during PIP Fix installation and adjustment, to confirm an adequate portion of the intact dorsal base ...

Research projects currently conducted in the Occupational Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory: A Direct Reading Assessment Instrument for Repetitive Motion Stress. We are investigating how computer vision (i.e. software for processing video recording data) can more effectively evaluate worker exposure and assess the associated risk for work related injuries than conventional methods.

Hand Biomechanics Lab is committed to the analysis and solution of difficult patient problems with the hope and faith that our work will extend to improve the quality of patient care everywhere. At Hand Biomechanics Lab we believe the optimal approach for developing new technology extends from a “partnership” between surgeons and bioengineers.
The TurnKey FCS is our external fixator for treating acute, dorsal fracture dislocations of the PIP joints of the fingers. Learn more… The PIP Fix is our external fixator for treating dorsal fracture dislocations of the PIP joints of the fingers.
The nine principles of biomechanics can be classified into those related to movement of the body or a projectile. The human body can be a projectile, so all nine principles can be applied to the human body. says that unbalanced forces are acting on our bodies or objects when we either create or modify movement.
Developed to reverse severe PIP flexion contractures, the Digit Widget utilizes the principle that an extension torque applied over time will result in the lengthening of shortened palmar tissues. Learn more…
Research from the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory has been presented in many peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, and research presentations at local, national, and international conferences. The origin of the Orthopaedics Biomechanics Laboratory began with faculty driven hand surgery research in 1984.
The UTMB Orthopaedics Biomechanics Laboratory is devoted to the advancement of clinical care by continuously seeking improved knowledge of musculoskeletal function. The lab is an integral part of the department, providing the space and resources to host educational training, as well as support for faculty, resident, and student research.
The group was soon joined by Rita Patterson, PhD in 1985, and Clarence Nicodemus, PhD, and William L. Buford, PhD in 1992. During this period, the Hand Surgery Division contributed greatly in the areas of wrist anatomy, bone contact pressures and load mechanics, kinematics and kinetics, 3D computer modeling and analysis.
The Biomechanics Lab is equipped with an MTS® 858 Mini-Bionix biaxial materials testing machine - a computer controlled, servohydraulic system capable of measuring axial forces up to 10,000N and torsional forces up to 100Nm with its largest load cell.
