If you like 'modern' abandoned places and ruins, this place is definitely worth visiting, even if you're only limited to walking along the designated path which is designed such that you can get an unobstructed view of the buildings without people getting in your way.

Now a desert island, it shelters the ruins of a former mining town only accessible by guided tours. HASHIMA was closed to the public on July 31, 2019 due to the detection of unusually high levels of airborne asbestos.
By the 1950s, the population had swelled to as many as 5,000 people, attracted by solid wages and the unique mining culture. As coal power gave way to gasoline, coal prices fell, and many mines, including HASHIMA, were permanently closed.
Nagasaki is the closest city to HASHIMA and is linked to major Japanese hubs by air, or by rail from Fukuoka. Several tour companies take groups to the island from Nagasaki, such as Gunkanjima Concierge, which has multilingual tour guides, though most of the speaking on the way out will be in Japanese.
Silhouette of HASHIMA, aka Gunkanjima ('battleship island'). Image by Ray Bartlett / Lonely Planet HASHIMA, also known as Gunkanjima (‘battleship island’ – so named because of its ship-like silhouette), is an island off the coast of Nagasaki in southwest Japan.
During its peak, HASHIMA island was home to 5300 people, five times more than Tokyo in the same period. At first, the electricity was supplied by a generator, but later by the undersea cable from Takashima island from 1918. There were vegetable gardens on the roofs of apartment buildings, and flowers and vegetables were grown there.
But calls for its preservation, a cameo role in a Bond movie, and Unesco recognition have all helped make this once-forgotten isle a now popular, ghostly attraction. Silhouette of HASHIMA, aka Gunkanjima ('battleship island').
