This tutorial provides a quick introduction to get you up and running with your HAWQ installation. You will be introduced to basic HAWQ functionality, including cluster management, database creation, and simple querying. You will also become acquainted with using the HAWQ Extension Framework (PXF) to access and query external HDFS data sources.

HAWQ breaks complex queries into small tasks and distributes them to MPP query processing units for execution. HAWQ’s basic unit of parallelism is the segment instance. Multiple segment instances on commodity servers work together to form a single parallel query processing system.

With HAWQ, however, you use the PXF HBase plug-in to specify the subset of HBase qualifiers that define the HAWQ PXF table. To set up a clear mapping between each attribute in the PXF table and a specific qualifier in the HBase table, you can use either direct mapping or indirect mapping. In addition, the HBase row key is handled in a special way.

When the HAWQ restart command runs, the utility uploads changes made to the master pg_hba.conf file or to the runtime configuration parameters in the master HAWQ-site.xml file without interruption of service. Note that any active sessions will not pick up the changes until they reconnect to the database.

HAWQ will reject query resource allocation requests that have a variance greater than the value set in HAWQ_rm_nvseg_variance_amon_seg_limit. For example, one query execution causes nine (9) virtual segments to be dispatched to two (2) physical segments. Assume that one segment has been allocated seven (7) virtual segments and another one has ...

Fatal errors can occur due to hardware failure or if you fail to kill a HAWQ process before attempting a filespace location change. Make sure you back this directory up. Step 4: Move the Filespace Location. Note: Ambari users must perform this manual step. HAWQ provides the command line tool, HAWQ filespace, to move the location of the filespace.

A query submitted to HAWQ is optimized, broken into smaller components, and dispatched to segments that work together to deliver a single result set. All relational operations - such as table scans, joins, aggregations, and sorts - simultaneously execute in parallel across the segments.
HAWQ reads data from and writes data to HDFS natively. HAWQ delivers industry-leading performance and linear scalability. It provides users the tools to confidently and successfully interact with petabyte range data sets.
Based on Hadoop’s distributed storage, HAWQ has no single point of failure and supports fully-automatic online recovery. System states are continuously monitored, therefore if a segment fails, it is automatically removed from the cluster.
There are several dependencies (see the following table) you must install before building HAWQ. To build Apache HAWQ, gcc and some dependencies are needed. The libraries are tested on the given versions. Most of the dependencies can be installed through yum. Other dependencies should be installed through the source tarball.
Apache HAWQ source code contains the Dockerfiles to help developers to setup building and testing environment with docker. Once you have an environment with the necessary dependencies installed and Hadoop is ready, the next step is to g et the code and build HAWQ # The code directory is HAWQ.

HAWQ entered incubation in September of 2015 and made four releases as an incubating project. Along the way, the HAWQ community has worked hard to ensure that the project is being developed according to the principles of the The Apache Way. We will continue to do so in the future as a TLP, to the best of our ability.
