The basic technology for the gas-discharge lamp has existed for over 300 years, and these same principals also guided innovations in other lighting types such as fluorescent and neon. The invention of the gas-discharge lamp is generally credited to Francis Hauksbee, an English scie…

2. Xenon / High-InTENSity Discharge Headlight Bulbs. These halogen headlight bulbs were initially used in high-end and premium vehicles, but as the world becomes a small village, many manufacturers are now using them. These bulbs are more powerful than halogen headlight bulbs since they produce light that covers a distance of about 250 meters.

High-InTENSity discharge (HID) lamps are similar to fluorescents in that an arc is generated between two electrodes. The arc in an HID source is shorter, yet it generates much more light, heat, and pressure within the arc tube. Below are HID sources, listed in increasing order of efficacy (lumens per watt): mercury vapor; metal halide

Like the name implies, high InTENSity discharge lighting creates a very bright light that is ideal for night time driving. Though the color of the light is often perceived as having a bluish tint when viewed at night, most of the light that is produced by HID headlamps is actually very close in color to natural noontime sunlight -- though some of the light produced is also in the blue and …

HID, or high-InTENSity discharge light bulbs, are a family of gas-discharge arc lamps which create light by sending an electrical discharge between two electrodes and through a plasma, or ionized gas. An additional gas is generally used, and this gas serves as an easy way to classify the major types of high InTENSity lamps: Mercury, sodium, and ...

Get to know your light bulbs with our comprehensive type guides. What are they? HID, or high-InTENSity discharge light bulbs and lamps, are a family of gas-discharge arc lamps which create light by sending an electrical discharge between two electrodes and through a plasma, or ionized gas.
Since most HID lamps produce light which is either very cool white/blue or warm white/yellow, they are generally not used in applications where the aesthetic quality of light is important. Also, some HID bulbs require an extended warm up time and are not suitable for applications where lights are turned on and off on a regular basis.
These lamps are known for their high efficiency at turning electricity into light and their long rated life. HID lamps require a ballast in order to generate the initial surge of electricity needed to start them and to regulate their power during normal operation. Where did they come from?

High InTENSity Discharge grow lights (HID) remain a popular choice, whether it be HPS or MH particularly for novice growers due to their low set up cost. If you are interested in LED grow lights we discuss that here . What are HID grow lights?
HID lamps are also used in lamps for underwater diving. The higher efficacy of HID lamps compared to halogen units means longer burn times for a given battery size and light output. Factors of wear come mostly from on/off cycles versus the total on time.
