What are they? HID, or high-InTENSity discharge light bulbs and lamps, are a family of gas-discharge arc lamps which create light by sending an electrical discharge between two electrodes and through a plasma, or ionized gas.
Modern HID technology has further increased light output through experimentation in gas mixtures and improved electrodes, but the functional basics of the high-InTENSity discharge lamp remain the same. How do they work?
Types of High-InTENSity Discharge Lamps. Mercury vapor lamps. Mercury vapor lamps are widely used to light both indoor and outdoor areas such as gymnasiums, factories, department stores, banks, highways, parks, and sports fields.
Since most HID lamps produce light which is either very cool white/blue or warm white/yellow, they are generally not used in applications where the aesthetic quality of light is important. Also, some HID bulbs require an extended warm up time and are not suitable for applications where lights are turned on and off on a regular basis.
Sometimes the battery or the air filter housing is in the way and sometimes you have to take the inner fender out and get behind it. However, if you can open the headlight, it’s then just a matter of changing the halogen bulb. This means seeing how the bulb is locked in and carefully unlocking it.
Don’t wait until your bulbs are burned out, which is not only unsafe but also places you at risk for being pulled over. If you notice your bulbs are dim or flickering, it’s time to replace them.
When to replace your headlights. As a rule of thumb, if one bulb’s gone or fading, the other won’t be far behind. So replace both bulbs at the same time. For many vehicles these days, one bulb serves for both high and low beams. In older models, however, two separate headlight bulbs were used on both sides.
Consult your owner's manual for the specific type of replacement bulbs you can use for your vehicle. Then select the bulbs that will give you the best visibility and value for your needs. You can also consider upgrading your headlights to Xenon, if they don't come standard on your vehicle.
