It is the type that only has the abilitiy to raise the anchor, not lower.*. You lower it by*using a handle to release the tension on the*gypsy and letting it freewheel out.*.

Jul 25, 2005 . I am in a bind. My boat has an Ideal CWM windlass and the wildcat for pulling chain has worn down so badly that it doesn't work anymore. The boat is due to do whale research in August in Alaska, with some challenging anchoring situations. Meanwhile, Ideal is on vacation for two weeks and doesn't respond to any e-mails, etc. Does anyone know of

Mar 07, 2019 . Ideal previously had diagrams up on the site before Schaefer purchased them a few years ago. We upgraded our Ideal vertical windlass to handle the larger anchor and also hi-test chain. In hindsight, it probably would have been less costly to replace the older windlass w/a new one than to do a la carte upgrades.We didn't need to replace the motor and could see that being very expensive.

Nov 20, 2014 . The Ideal Windlass was a 120 volt AC motor with no reversing, so it had to be manhandled. Incidentally, we once snapped the axle shaft on the Ideal, possibly from enthusiastic anchor setting . It was a real pain to pull up 150' of 3/8" chain and a CQR anchor by hand. Always use a snubber!

There is no drain plug on the Model CWM. Use a small oil changing pump to remove the old oil. Fill to the level of the oil plug with 90WT gear oil. Do not overfill.
