Later, flower arrangements were instead used to adorn the tokonoma (alcove) of a traditional Japanese home. Ikebana reached its first zenith in the 16th century under the influence of Buddhist tea masters and has grown over the centuries, with numerous distinct schools extant today.
The Rise of Modern Ikebana. Manhattan-based designer Emily Thompson’s arrangement of wild autumn clematis vine, whose delicate white flowers turn into fluffy seed pods come fall, and a single red castor bean pod in the mouth of a disko metal fish. “I wanted the effect of a tempest for the fish to float in,” she says.
Ikebana can be practiced by both amateurs and professionals, both of whom are able to achieve elegant results. However, like many other art forms, mastering the basics is fundamental to any practice, and only then can a person begin to experiment.
There exist three active Inter-chapter Liaisons；NCA Regional Liaison Office, Asian Liaison Office, and South American Liaison Office.
By October of 1959, the Chapter was officially recognized by Ikebana International as Chapter #27. The members would meet on a regular basis, forming friendships and sharing the same goal, to promote the Art.
The Chicago Chapter of Ikebana International was founded in 1959. It began as a grassroots effort organized by Mary Takahashi through the encouragement of Ikebana International founder, Ellen Gordon Allen. By October of 1959, the Chapter was officially recognized by Ikebana International as Chapter #27.
The Seattle Chapter 19, chartered March 16, 1959, is dedicated to cultivating and perpetuating the study of Ikebana by demonstrations and public exhibitions, with a deep purpose of establishing a better relationship among all people. The chapter is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019.
