The recommended design option for those building a converged access and aggregation network is to utilize a L3VPN to carry CIN traffic. Design optimization has resulted in several typical cable designs that are widely used. The most common distribution cable design in most of the world uses a solid aluminum shield, foamed polyethylene dielectric, and a copper-clad aluminum center conductor.

For audio interconnects, shielded twisted pair or shielded COAX work extremely well for audio. Unshielded twisted pair is good for rejecting magnetic pickup but not so good at eliminating capacitive pickup (unless the interfaces between components are balanced).
But in general, power cords and conditioners make the biggest difference. Then speaker cables and lastly interconnects. But again it depends on the system. I have found mixing brands of speaker cables and interconnects can deter the performance of both. Synergy is the most important thing.
The answer is simple: nothing! That's right, electrically these $500 speaker cables are no different from a $30 roll of speaker wire from Walmart. They can charge sky-high prices because they claim the geometry and the design of the wires will improve the quality of the sound of your system. But what if you just want them because they look cool?
Interconnects do however still make a difference. True, neither type of cable will make a huge difference. Swapping the cheap and nasty NE5532 Op-Amp in a CD-Player Output-Stage for a really nice one (like the AD811 or my favorite Nat Semi LM6172) makes more of an audible difference. To get the ultimate from your system, you need the right cables.
