A fireplace's crackling sound and the dancing flames are mesmerizing—the best entertainment around. Wood-burning fireplaces are the real stuff. But unlike gas fireplaces, you do pay for that genuine experience in the form of regular maintenance. For your comfort and your safety, keep your fireplace well-maintained with these tips.
Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything that is potentially flammable (ie: furniture, drapes, newspapers, books, etc.). If these items get too close to the fireplace, they could catch fire. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Make sure it is completely out before going to bed or leaving the house.
The first place to prevent problems with your fireplace or wood stove is to select the right kind of wood. Use dried and well-seasoned wood that burns hot and completely enough so that it produces less creosote and carbon monoxide. Don't use chemicals.
Safety screens can be installed to reduce the risk of burns. Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything that is potentially flammable (ie: furniture, drapes, newspapers, books, etc.). If these items get too close to the fireplace, they could catch fire.
