Aug 25, 2010 . One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that HVAC design is a lot more than Manual J. Most HVAC contractors, home energy raters, and others in this field know about Manual J. Many people even know about Manual D, which describes how to design the duct system. Not so many, however, know about the missing links – Manual S and Manual T.

Manual J might be able to calculate proper conditioned air levels, but if the airflow is weak, the air will feel stagnant and uncomfortable. Manual D works in conjunction with the other manuals to provide proper design, sizing, and installation of residential duct systems.
In short, Manual J is the protocol that is used in order to determine the correct amount of heat that is needed to keep a house warm for its occupants, and the amount of cold air required in order to cool it when needed. The Manual J Calculation gets complicated oftentimes and requires good knowledge of the technique.
After you have determined the heating and cooling loads (Manual J), selected the right HVAC equipment (Manual S), and figured out how to distribute the air (Manual T), you can now design the duct system (Manual D). Ductwork design is extremely important to prevent air and energy leaks, in addition to humidity and moisture problems.
Manual D works in conjunction with the other manuals to provide proper design, sizing, and installation of residential duct systems. After you have determined the heating and cooling loads (Manual J), selected the right HVAC equipment (Manual S), and figured out how to distribute the air (Manual T), you can now design the duct system (Manual D).
Better would be to use an actual blower door number. For example, if your code requires 3 ACH50, enter that into the calculation. If you’re going for Passive House certification, enter 0.6 ACH50 or 0.05 cfm50/sf of enclosure.
The Manual J residential calculation is actually the proper method for sizing an HVAC unit—a technique designed by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). This calculation is commonly performed with complex computer programs, which require time, energy, and money.
The HVAC load calculation shows you the exact amount of BTUs a certain space requires for sufficient heating and cooling. It identifies the square footage of the room to determine the capacity—BTUs per hour—needed to reach the desired indoor temperature.
The ServiceTitan HVAC Calculator is intuitively designed to help you figure out the recommended equipment capacity for any room or house. The HVAC load calculation shows you the exact amount of BTUs a certain space requires for sufficient heating and cooling.
