There are some benefits to size, and the J/34c is a bigger boat than you may imagine. Since you can't do much with overhang, the best measure to use is length on the waterline (LWL). This is a speed producing factor and a comfort factor going through a seaway. Longer waterline boats have smoother, less bouncy rides than shorter ones.

None of the boat builders produced an owner’s manual in the early years and only a few did in the more recent years; but they were very limited in information and quite generic to either the whole boat line or boating in general.
All J/Boat designs are monohull, sloop -rigged keelboats constructed of cored sandwich fiberglass. The current product line consists of eight models, ranging from the J/70 to the J/122E, ranging in length from 22.75 to 40 ft (6.9 to 12.2 m). A new 9 meter model has been announced for 2021.
