The Janszens will play loudly (well over 100dB) and cleanly at high volumes. These are not dynamically limited speakers as far as sensible use in rooms of domestic size. It’s a hybrid electrostatic-dynamic design which draws on the rich heritage invoked by the Janszen name, and not in some tacky, derivative way – see power tools “made by” Kawasaki, cars from Suzuki (aka rebranded Daewoo), and the Hasselblad HV camera (rebadged Sony) for examples of that type of thing. No, Janszen is the real deal.
The Janszens are unique in offering sealed enclosures, with moderate-sized electrostatic panels flanked vertically by high-excursion dynamic drivers, all in a handsome enclosure that won’t dominate a room. Unlike pretty much every e-stat I’ve ever encountered, Janszen does not use a dipole design.
My first experience with the Janszens involved a somewhat large room, with the speakers placed at least several feet away from all boundaries and approximately 8 feet from one another. With zero optimization, just throwing the speakers in place with a slight toe-in, the resulting sound was… jaw-dropping.
All modern Janszen Audio products extend the technology of David Janszen's father, Arthur A. Janszen, inventor of the first practical electrostatic transducer in the early 1950's. The Janszen active Valentinas were shockingly good and with built in DAC and built-in biamped 500watts of Hypex Class D (which I thought I would hate...) nothing came close at $12,750... again for the whole system. It's unbelievable. I listened to many many rooms before coming to that conclusion.
