• What is JBI evidence synthesis?

  This special issue of JBI Evidence Synthesis was prompted by some of the compelling health and social concerns facing the elderly in communities around the globe. Although this issue was months in the planning, the outbreak of COVID-19 has highlighted some of the ways in which older persons in our communities are especially vulnerable.

• How should a study be classified as a randomised trial?

  Indexers may not classify a report as a randomised trial if the authors do not explicitly report this information. ( 64) To help ensure that a study is appropriately indexed and easily identified, authors should use the word "randomised" in the title to indicate that the participants were randomly assigned to their comparison groups.

• What is the purpose of the checklist items in a study?

  The checklist items focus on reporting how the trial was designed, analyzed, and interpreted; the flow diagram displays the progress of all participants through the trial. The CONSORT “Explanation and Elaboration” document explains and illustrates the principles underlying the CONSORT Statement.

• Is randomisation used to allocate participants to treatment groups?

  An appropriate method of randomisation was used to allocate participants to treatment groups (which would have balanced any confounding factors equally across groups) There was adequate concealment of allocation (such that investigators, clinicians and participants cannot influence enrolment or treatment allocation)
