The JNC 8 guidelines move away from the assumption that lower blood pressure levels will improve outcomes regardless of the type of agent used to achieve the lower level. Instead, the JNC 8 guidelines encourage use of agents with the best evidence of reducing cardiovascular risk.
JOINT NATIONAL COMMITTEE (JNC) GUIDELINES FOR HYPERTENSION. Goal for all patients < 60 years: BP should be < 140/90 mmHg, irrespective of presence or absence of diabetes (DM) or chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The JNC 7 guideline authors also acknowledged that <60 years of age. However, in patients 60 years and older SBP control remains the most important factor. guidelines for most patients may have been unnecessarily low.
You may have heard that there are guidelines for the management of high blood pressure in adults. 1 These guidelines were published by the 8th Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, known as JNC 8. The guidelines were created after a committee of experts synthesized all available scientific evidence, and they were updated to provide guidance for doctors for the management of hypertension .
JNC 8 Hypertension Guideline Algorithm Lifestyle changes: • Smoking Cessation • Control blood glucose and lipids • Diet Eat healthy (i.e., DASH diet) Moderate alcohol consumption Reduce sodium intake to no more than 2,400 mg/day •Physical activity Moderate-to-vigorous activity 3-4 days a week averaging 40 min per session.
Target blood pressure goal (according to JNC VII) – 140/90 mm Hg for all, except patients with diabetes, chronic renal disease & BP below 130/80 mm Hg. Life-style modification (physical exercise, weight reduction, salt restriction).
JNC 8 The Joint National Commission issued updated hypertension guidelines in December 2013 based on more rigorous evidence, and less dependence on expert opinion, than JNC 7. JNC 8 only answers a few new questions for the primary care physician, mostly focused on hypertension treatment recommendations.
