JOINT NATIONAL COMMITTEE (JNC) GUIDELINES FOR HYPERTENSION. Goal for all patients < 60 years: BP should be < 140/90 mmHg, irrespective of presence or absence of diabetes (DM) or chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Target blood pressure goal (according to JNC VII) – 140/90 mm Hg for all, except patients with diabetes, chronic renal disease & BP below 130/80 mm Hg. Life-style modification (physical exercise, weight reduction, salt restriction). Unhealthy lifestyle – Thiazides diuretics (if not contraindicated). JNC VII – BP classification

The JNC 8 guideline authors simplified a complicated recommendation for followup in patients with hypertension.
ADA Standards of Care The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has slightly different recommendations than JNC 8. While JNC 8 suggests treating patients with both diabetes and hypertension to a blood pres- sure goal <140/90 mmHg, ADA standards of care advise treat- ing to a goal of <140/80 mmHg.
Like the JNC 7 panel, the JNC 8 panel recommended thiazide-type diuretics as initial therapy for most patients. Although ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are acceptable alternatives, thiazide-type diuretics still have the best evidence of efficacy.
