You may have heard that there are guidelines for the management of high blood pressure in adults. 1 These guidelines were published by the 8th Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, known as JNC 8. The guidelines were created after a committee of experts synthesized all available scientific evidence, and they were updated to provide guidance for doctors for the management of hypertension .
Target blood pressure goal (according to JNC VII) – 140/90 mm Hg for all, except patients with diabetes, chronic renal disease & BP below 130/80 mm Hg. Life-style modification (physical exercise, weight reduction, salt restriction).
JNC 8 The Joint National Commission issued updated hypertension guidelines in December 2013 based on more rigorous evidence, and less dependence on expert opinion, than JNC 7. JNC 8 only answers a few new questions for the primary care physician, mostly focused on hypertension treatment recommendations.
