The life of Joab coincides with King David's and is recorded in Second Samuel and First Kings. His name means "my father is God." As a young man Joab fought alongside David as one of his mighty men.
But their plans were defeated by those of the harem, and Joab had to pay the price with his life. Taken as a whole, his life, as depicted in the very reliable narrative of 2Sa and 1 Ki, may be said to be as characteristic of the times as that of David himself, with a truly Homeric ring about it.
Joab had two brothers, Abishai and Asahel. Asahel was killed by Abner in combat, for which Joab took revenge by murdering Abner against David's wishes and shortly after David and Abner had secured peace between the House of David and the House of Saul (2 Samuel 2:13-3:21; 3:27).
The life of Joab is a classic study in the way of the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Like the fruit of that tree, his decisions and conduct were a mixture of right and wrong—a blend of good and evil.
