Joab was the closest to David of the three, leading the Israelite army from the early days of David's reign up until his death. The life of Joab coincides with King David's and is recorded in Second Samuel and First Kings. His name means "my father is God."
Joab also counseled David when David sinfully desired to take a census; if David had heeded Joab’s advice, he could have spared his nation the plague that befell Israel (2 Samuel 24). When David was on his death bed, Joab conspired with Adonijah to install Adonijah as the next king, instead of Solomon (1 Kings 1).
Joab showed a lot of discernment here. He had a sharp eye to observe and understand a situation. Realizing that David’s soldiers felt shame after a victory, Joab knew that something needed to be done or David’s army would desert him. Knowing something needs to be done and doing it are different. However, Joab boldly spoke up to the king.
However, Joab was ambitious and headstrong, causing him to disobey David's orders and on various occasions make selfish decisions. Joab's power-hungry ambition was evident from early on. After his brother Asahel was killed by Abner in battle, he wanted revenge.
Ancestry and family life: Joab is the son of Zeruiah (David’s half sister.) He is often identified as the “son of Zeruiah.” It is significant because that is his mother and it is rare for men to be identified as the son of a mother rather than the father.

Without the power of God converting his mind, guiding his thoughts, and enabling him to build holy, righteous character, Joab relied upon himself. The great skills, gifts and responsibilities he possessed convinced him that he was smart enough to direct his own life.
