  The U.I.S.D. Security K-9 Unit Standard Operating Manual I. PURPOSE To establish procedures and regulations governing the training, use, and administration of all police service dog teams employed by the UISD Police Department. These teams will be referred to throughout this Manual as “K9” Teams.

• How do you take care of a K9 patrol dog?

  Food for the canine is provided to the handler and shall be given in a prescribed manner. G. A canine shall never be left unsupervised in the K9 patrol unit. The rear windows shall remain rolled down even when the air conditioner is running. At no time shall the canine be left with the windows rolled up with or without the air conditioning running.

  The objective of the K-9 unit is to provide line support teams within the Office with highly mobile, specially-trained Police/Sheriff’s dogs. The K-9 Team has particular attributes in searching for items or people which can quickly facilitate their location.

• What are the requirements for K9 training for FWO handlers?

  When FWO handlers provide K9 care off duty, we must compensate them in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. We must provide at least 8 on-duty hours per pay period of training time to the FWO handler.
