KACHINA went out of the radio business in 2003, making this an orphan. 16 channels, hi-lo power, scan and (apparently) a CTCSS function. Built stronger than a brick in an anodized aluminum case.
He is mainly seen during the Bean and Mixed KACHINA Dances. Bean – Dances for a plentiful crop of beans. Bear – Also called Hon, the Bear KACHINAs are very powerful, capable of curing bad illnesses, and are great warriors. They are frequently distinguished only by color, such as white, black, blue, or yellow.
Chief KACHINAs include: Ogres – The ogres are disciplinary KACHINAs. Their purpose is to frighten children into good behavior. During ceremonies, they demand food and visit each home in the pueblo or village. Each ogre has his or her own personality and role within a ceremony.
KACHINA made a series of HF SSB radios, apparently ending with the KC 105, and then moved on to an interesting software defined radio that interfaced with a personal computer, before exiting the radio communications business about 2003. The channel select knob is one from my junkbox and doesn't exactly match the original.
KACHINAs are expressed in three ways: the spiritual or supernatural deities, the masked dancers representing KACHINAs at religious ceremonies, and KACHINA dolls or carvings. The origin of KACHINAs is not entirely known, but according to Hopi oral traditions, these mostly benevolent spiritual beings came from the underworld with the Hopi people.
There are more than 400 different KACHINAs in Hopi and Pueblo culture, which vary from one pueblo community to another. KACHINAs are expressed in three ways: the spiritual or supernatural deities, the masked dancers representing KACHINAs at religious ceremonies, and KACHINA dolls or carvings.
Mudhead KACHINA – Known as Koyemsi, these are the most popular KACHINAs among the Hopi people because they appear in all of the ceremonies. Mud Head usually accompanies most KACHINAs during the ceremonies, and they come as clowns, announcers of dances, drummers and singers.
Powamuya – Also called the Bean Dance, the ceremony, taking place in February sees the KACHINAs arrive in force to help the Hopi prepare for the next growing season and to initiate children into the KACHINA Society. The most important KACHINA ceremony is a series of rituals that promote fertility, germination, and early growth of seeds.
