However, according to the Hopi, katsina (kahts-ee-nah) is more correct and preferred. In English, the plural of KACHINA is KACHINAs, but in the Hopi language the plural of katsina is katsinam. The first known KACHINA dolls were obtained by traders in 1857.
KACHINA dolls are representations of benevolent spirit beings who live among the Hopi for a six-month period each year. They first arrive on the Hopi mesas in February and return to their spiritual homes in July. KACHINA tradition is unique only to the Pueblo Tribes of Arizona and New Mexico.

The exact origin of the KACHINAs is not completely known, but according to one version of Hopi belief, the KACHINAs were beneficent spirit-beings who came with the Hopis from the underworld. The underworld is a concept common to all the Pueblo Indians.
To the Hopis, KACHINAs are supernatural beings who visit the villages to help the Hopis with everyday activities and act as a link between gods and mortals. According to Susanne and Jake Page, the katsinam are "the spirits of all things in the universe, of rocks, stars, animals, plants, and ancestors who have lived good lives."
