The ends of the ladders should fit into small notched provided in the side sills of the wagon. The ends of the ladder may be a fraction of a millimetre too long. Once again, a Kadee coupler height gauge is your friend. Some wheelsets still come from the manufacturer with plastic wheels. Better long-term running can be achieved by replacing any plastic wheels with metal wheels. They run freer and do not accumulate dirt as quickly. Make sure that the wheels spin freely in the trucks.

Uncoupling is achieved by magnetically acting on a magnetic rod hanging below the coupler to rotate the coupler faces apart once slack has been established in the couplers. The rod is fashioned to look something like a brake hose. For more information on the Kadee coupler, see Kadee Tips.
Some Kadee coupler styles, such as the #830, have a draft spring that both centers coupler and provides some give in the draft gear. I personally don't like this draft gear arrangement as there is a lot of runout in the couplers as you literally stretch out a train.
The Aristo coupler is similar except that the locking pin is spring loaded and not accessible from the top of the coupler.
