Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) is a strategy where employees at all levels of a company work together proactively to achieve regular, incremental improvements to the manufacturing process. In a sense, it combines the collective talents within a company to create a powerful engine for improvement.
Masaaki Imai helped document kaizen principles and methods with his books in the mid-1980’s. When the improvement requires personnel outside of the immediate work area, a kaizen burst (or radical process improvement) event may be useful.
It is an upper level strategic planning method which results in a number of planned Kaizen events over a long period of time. It is in contrast to point Kaizen which generally happens as a result of identification of a small issue which is resolved in a short period of time.
