The Kano model helps them do so. The Kano Model is a way to identify different kinds of product features and measure their presence (or absence) against customer satisfaction. Let’s find out how the Kano Model can help you define and prioritize features in your next product.
There are three types of user need, or requirement, in the Kano Model: basic, performance, and attractive. Let’s take a closer look. Think, the functional brakes on that car you were going to buy a few paragraphs back.
Especially for product managers, a Kano Analysis can help to create the right roadmap for a product. It is particularly helpful in evaluating new product ideas and potential improvements, as well as considerations for communicating certain product features that differentiate from the competition.
The Kano model is dived into four quadrants, separated by two sliding scales: satisfaction and functionality. Move proposed features into one of the four quadrants: attractive, must-be, performance and indifference. These features are not expected and don’t directly improve performance, but they surprise and delight when they occur.
Noriaki Kano, a Japanese researcher and consultant, published a paper in 1984 1 with a set of ideas and techniques that help us determine our customers’ (and prospects’) satisfaction with product features. These ideas are commonly called the Kano Model and are based upon the following premises:
The questionnaire and how you present it is your only input method to the Kano study. Thus, you should ensure this step is as effective as you can possibly make it. It’s critical to make your questions as clear and succinct as possible. Each should stand for a single feature.
Kano proposes a dimension that goes from total satisfaction (also called Delight and Excitement) to total dissatisfaction (or Frustration ). In the image above, the dimension is annotated with different satisfaction levels. It’s important to note that this is not (always) a linear scale, as we’ll see in a second.
