As its name suggests (no pun intended), the manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) is the price a manufacturer recommends retailers use when selling a product. Manufacturers first started using MSRPs to help standardize different prices of products across multiple locations and retailers.
The manufacturer’s suggested retail price usually applies to branded products or higher-priced goods, such as electronics and appliances. The MSRP mainly serves as a reference point, manipulating the consumers’ willingness to pay for goods from store to store.
On the other hand, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price is different from the invoice price, which a dealer pays to the manufacturer. Previously, car dealers could impose arbitrary markups, often with costs artificially inflated to over-compensate total production costs.
Here’s an example based on a wholesale price of $30 and a 60% markup percentage: Convert the markup percent into a decimal: 60% = .60 Subtract it from 1 (to get the inverse): 1 - .60 = .40 Divide the wholesale price by .40 The answer is your retail price $30 (Wholesale Price) / (1 - .60) = $75 (Retail Price)
