The range is about 500 km (311 mi) in length, and is the most heavily glaciated part of the world outside the polar regions.
Structurally, the Karakorams originated from folding in the Cenozoic Era (i.e., during the past 65 million years). Granites, gneisses, crystallized schists, and phyllites dominate the geologic composition.
