Jul 15, 2015 . @sazarando -- historical use and etymological derivations are the main indicator. The history of Kawaii is quite clearly recorded, so we know that this developed as a progression from kahahayushi → kahayushi → kawayushi → kawayui → Kawaii. We also know that the oldest form kahahayushi was a compound of 顔 kaho, modern kao, "face" + 映し hayushi, obsolete, "florid, flushed".

" Kawai " in actuality, is not a Japanese word at all. It is usually a misspelling of one of the following: 1. "Kawaii" which means "cute" in Japanese; 2. " Kowai " which means "scary" in Japanese; 3. "I'm a crazy fangirl who does not care look into the actual Japanese language." Sou da ne? CrZFnnGrrl27: Kawai desu ne?
And that Kawaisou comes from the i -adjective Kawaii 可愛い, which means "cute," but can also mean "pitiable," combined with the suffix -sou ~そう, which means "it seems." The way it's used, though, is really to express pity or sympathy for someone or something, specially right before going help them. For example: [It] seems pitiable.
Koichi Kawai, the company founder, was born in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1886. His neighbor, Torakusu Yamaha, a watchmaker and reed organ builder, took him in as an apprentice. Kawai became a member of the research and development team that introduced pianos to Japan. Yamaha died in 1916, and in the 1920s the piano industry faltered in Japan.
