Sep 19, 2017 . The PFR-3B (a Steve Weber KD1JV design) is just such a radio yet the front end is one of the better designs I've seen in portable radios. It is manually tuned - so you can find the best signal - and has a very tight filter. The CW note seems to pop up out of near silence.

The power at 12V is the stated 5+ Watts on 40m and 20m, but is a bit low on 30m, around 4.1-4.2 Watts. Also the receive on 30m is noticeably less sensitive than on 40m a. I worked 80 stations on 15 CW with my KD1JV 30-17-15 Tribander. Most were US, but also a handful of HQ stations in Eu.

Some research led me to a QST article for a short 40, 80 and 160 meter trap dipole. [2][3] This design used double-wound traps made from only the inner conductor of RG-58 coax. The trap design was a little more complicated, but would almost fit into my back yard.
