7 Why Use KDF Media? KDF stands for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion, it’s a filter media that contains high-purity copper-zinc granules to reduce contaminants in water through a redox reaction – oxidation or reduction. The KDF process media is often used in water treatment solutions to reduce heavy metals, hydrogen sulfide, and chlorine.
You’ll need to use KDF filter in conjunction with water filters that can remove these contaminants if your water supply contains them. Though you won’t need to spend lots of money on maintaining process media KDF, you will have to put in the work of backwashing the media with hot water.
This type of KDF media, being so effective at removing hydrogen sulfide, is particularly useful for treating well water. To remove heavy metals such as copper, nickel, chromium, lead, & mercury, you can use KDF 85, KDF 55 or KDF-C media.
The KDF 55 granules are used to reduce and remove soluble heavy metals and chlorine contaminants from water. They are commonly used in water filtration systems like multi-stage water filters, faucet filters, and shower filters. The KDF 85 granules are used to reduce and remove hydrogen sulfide and iron contaminants from water.
Our KDF water filters use more KDF Media than any other KDF filters on the market. KDF55 Media is the only thing that will remove Chlorine and works in both city water and well water filters. KDF 55 and KDF 85 Process Media can remove up to 99% of water-soluble lead, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals.

The KDF process media is often used in water treatment solutions to reduce heavy metals, hydrogen sulfide, and chlorine.
KDF filter media uses a combination of copper and zinc, which produces an electrochemical reaction/ redox reaction when water flows through. In this reaction, electrons in the filter media swap places with the contaminants in the water. The KDF media then alters these contaminants so that they’re no longer harmful.
During the redox process, the KDF media will transfer two negatively charged electrons to chlorine molecules to reduce them to chloride (lower oxidation state), which is highly soluble and harmless. The KDF 85 filter media can effectively remove over 90% of Iron contaminants from water.
