Kdump is a Kernel crash dumping mechanism that allows you to save the contents of the system’s memory for later analysis. It relies on kexec, which can be used to boot a Linux Kernel from the context of another Kernel, bypass BIOS, and preserve the contents of the first Kernel’s memory that would otherwise be lost.. In case of a system crash, kdump uses kexec to boot into a second Kernel ...

The following manuals are written for users of the Kernel — those who are trying to get it to work optimally on a given system. The following holds information on the Kernel’s expectations regarding the platform firmwares.
Gentoo provides two ways for users to handle Kernel configuration, installation, and upgrades: automatic (genKernel) and manual. Although the automatic method can be regarded as easier for most users, there are a number of reasons why a large proportion of Gentoo users choose to configure their Kernels manually:
1: User commands; man-pages includes a very few Section 1 pages that document programs supplied by the GNU C library. 2: System calls documents the system calls provided by the Linux Kernel. 3: Library functions documents the functions provided by the standard C library. 4: Devices documents details of various devices, most of which reside in /dev.
This chapter is therefore only useful for users who need to manually update a Kernel package using the rpm command instead of dnf .
